The return of the Bundesbüdchen to the former government district in Bonn

In the early morning hours, at about 2 am on Sunday, 17 May 2020, the heavy transport began at the Baumann company’s building yard in Hersel, where the Bundesbüdchen had been stored for the past 14 years. The distance to the former government district in Bonn is approximately 12 km. An advance troop removed signs and street lamps so that the heavy transporter with its precious freight could complete the trip undamaged – moving often only at a crawl. At 4 am the transport vehicle passed the deeply symbolic bronze bust of Konrad Adenauer who had been a customer in the Bundesbüdchen when he lived.
Upon the Kiosk’s arrival at its new location in Heussallee the crane was installed that was to lift the 50 tons heavy Bundesbüdchen onto the prepared base-plate. Then came the big moment: the sun was shining in the clear blue sky as the Kiosk swayed slowly in the air and was carefully lowered onto its future location while the assembled press and numerous camera teams followed the event. The many onlookers hold their breath; they have convened despite the early morning hours and restrictions imposed by the Covid-19 virus. But thanks to a mason’s level and excellent planning architect Christof Pfeifer and the experts from the Baumann company have everything under control.
Relief and happiness can be seen on the face not only of Jürgen Rausch, the former owner of the Bundesbüdchen, upon the return of the Kiosk after 14 long years. Attorney Peter Storsberg, President of the Friends of the Historic Kiosk, Dr. Stefan Eisel, former representative of Bonn in the German Bundestag and President of the Bürger für Beethoven association, master baker Peter Mauel, the future lease-holder of the historic kiosk, and Johanna Bittner-Kelber, Member of the Board of the Friends of the Historic Kiosk all share Jürgen Rausch’s delight upon the successful transport. The excitement of the Friends upon having reached this milestone along the way to restoring the Kiosk is also shared on this Sunday by Frau Dr. Karin Gehrmann and Frau Henriette Schröder from the Deutsche Stiftung Denkmalschutz, Prof. Dr. Erdmann, Chair of the NRW-Stiftung,  Bonn’s Municipal Conservator Katrin Bisping, and several other supporters over the course of many years (including persons such as Thomas Merz and Dr. Angelika Schymer). The restoration and repair of the beloved Kiosk in accordance with the guidelines or historic monuments can finally begin! The former center of the Federal Government in Bonn has a new symbol that recalls the eventful years of the Bonn Republic.
